Yesterday, August 22, started out like any other Sunday. It was the week to have church here at the mission. Around 10:00 am, Dad headed to neighbor lady Shelly Ann's to pick up her and her family for the service. A few other neighbors trickled in as the service began.
Pastor Andrew, from Cambridge, shared the message. He talked about praising and believing in God even in the hard times in life. In closing his sermon, Andrew said he felt like God was asking him to do something he doesn't always do. Andrew began sharing what it means to be a Christian and then gave an invitation for those who don't yet believe in God.
As Andrew asked if anyone wanted to come forward, I began praying for Shelly's older kids and their friends... I doubted that any of them were ready...
And then I saw Lenny walk toward the pulpit.
Lenny, just turned 13, recently moved in with Shelly and her family. He didn't have any other place to go, his mom lives around here, but she doesn't care where he stays...
One by one, several of Shelly's kids and their friends, and an older woman, came forward.
Andrew asked them if they really did want to follow Jesus. After all signifying that they did, Pastor Andrew led them in the salvation prayer.
I found out later that the older woman who also accepted Christ was Lenny's own mother, Sharnette. Shelly Ann had called her every day that week and told her to come to church. Sharnette's sandals broke on her way to the mission, so she walked most of the way barefoot. God knew she needed to be at church.
Seven people were added to God's Kingdom yesterday! Pray for Dontei (14), Odean & Odain (12), Zavia (12), Navi (20), Lenny (13) and his mother, Sharnette. This is only the beginning...
Pastor Andrew is planning to start a discipleship/preparation for baptism class for these new Christians. I believe God has great plans for these people and this country. Soli Deo gloria!
The ways that God works are more amazing than we can start to dream about!
